Three major factors to maximising personal potential are Mindfulness (Awareness), Emotional Intelligence-EQ (Emotional Understanding) and Self-Actualization (True You). Mindfulness and Emotional Intelligence cannot exist independently of each other. You can’t have one without the other. You can’t be aware of what you’re feeling if you can’t recognise emotions (EQ), and you can’t recognise emotions if not aware of them (Mindfulness). Self-Actualization can’t occur without a high degree of EQ. A welcome, positive side effect of Self Actualization is Success, Happiness, Clarity and Freedom!
Mindfulness training has been around for 2000 years. It benefits people’s quality of life- protecting people from depression, reducing stress levels, helping manage chronic pain, letting go of compulsive behaviours like smoking and over-eating.
‘Mindfulness’ essentially means moment-to-moment awareness. This description explains the basic philosophy:
When you are mindful, you become aware of yourself and your surroundings, simply observing these things as they are. You are aware of your own thoughts and feelings, but you do not react to them in the way that you would if you were on “autopilot. By not labelling or judging the events and circumstances taking place around you, you are freed from your normal tendency to react to them.
Be awake for your life. You’re a long time dead
Did you know EQ is 80% more important than IQ is in determining someone’s success?
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) consists of 4 core competencies : Self Awareness, Self- Management, Social Awareness, and Relationship Management. These four skills pair up under two primary competencies: personal competence and social competence. All of these can be measured and learned. Emotional Intelligence Predicts Performance and Success.
We are living in a world in which we are facing uncertainty, complexity and increasing chaos. EQ provides us with the skills we need to best deal with these issues and manage these pressures. These include resilience, confidence, self-esteem and self-belief.
Anxiety is the no.1 addiction in the 21st C, and The World Health Organisation predicts that depression will be the second highest cause of death in the next 10 years.
Emotions are the driving force and primary drivers behind every choice we make and goal we set. They are our internal communication, sending messages to us, steering our everyday decisions, and signalling us to pay attention.
Listen to your wisdom, your intuition, your gut. Never take your opinions, needs or desires lightly. Allow yourself to feel everything- disappointment, pain, joy, jealousy, hatred, euphoria, sadness, grief and everything in between.
What you ‘feel’ is more powerful than what you ‘think’.
So if emotions drive all your choices and decisions, shouldn’t you start to understand them, and use them as your internal compass to create a life that works for you?
Self Actualization- Being True You!
To become self-actualized means that you are living authentically, and realising your true potential. The term was coined by Abraham Maslow back in 1954, when he wrote about the ‘hierarchy of needs’. In this hierarchy, people have the ability to pass through different levels of growth from biological/physiological needs at the bottom through levels of ‘safety’, belonging/love, and self-esteem to finally reaching the final level of growth which he called self-actualization.
The hardest challenge is to be yourself in a world where everyone is trying to make you be somebody else. ~E. E. Cummings
So why is it so difficult for people to accept who they really are? In a word, pressure. There’s so much pressure, especially in today’s hypercompetitive and hyper-informed society, for people to be something they’re not.People succumb to the pressure out of FEAR. Fear of being judged, of going against the flow, of being unique.
Self Actualization is important to wellbeing because people are increasingly being judged, against a set of rigid criteria, which does not allow for everyone’s uniqueness and difference. People are encouraged to conform, becoming part of the homogenous masses, looking externally for guidance, acceptance and validation.
‘Why try to fit in when you were born to stand out?’
How can you make choices that allow you to tap into your highest potential? Prioritising time, choices, and making decisions based on that which reflects your highest values, your purpose, and passions, and enables you to grow. There are so many distractions today that can rob you of precious time that it’s wise to invest in only the essential.
Imagine how you could live, and who you could become, if you eliminated ‘should, have to, can’t, and try’ from your life. Let go of people pleasing-saying ‘No’ to others means saying ‘Yes’ to yourself. Be unapologetically you, never, ever editing yourself to please someone else.
